As I compose these words aboard the bullet train from Kyoto to Tokyo on this brisk 8th of November 2023, I find myself immersed in a week-long journey that commenced in Seoul, South Korea. My initial foray into the vibrant city unfolded in Seongsu, a locale likened to the Brooklyn of Seoul, as noted by BoF. The unfamiliarity of a first-time visitor dissipated as I embarked on a metro journey, a narrative unfolding against the backdrop of a bento box enjoyed amidst the rhythmic hum of high-speed travel.
In the heart of Seongsu, a fashion revelation awaited. The city's sartorial narrative spoke in bold monochromes—black and white, the undisputed palette of the discerning "cool kids." From platform boots to leather cropped jackets, and pleated skirts, the prevailing uniform exuded an effortlessly chic aesthetic. Stepping out of the metro, the streets were a canvas of this minimalist elegance, a subtle code of conformity that dictated a stylish coherence.
A striking manifestation of this trend awaited at the Jacquemus pop-up store—a vast, white bambimou positioned amidst the low-slung industrial architecture. Here, the French fashion house seemed to channel the city's prevailing ethos, marrying simplicity with sophistication.

Yet, Jacquemus was not alone in this fashion odyssey. The streets of Seongsu hosted a constellation of pop-up stores, each a unique universe. Burberry, Asics, Adererror—all coexisted harmoniously in a single street, weaving a tapestry of diverse styles against the urban canvas.

During my exploration of the mesmerizing East, my mind became a canvas for reflections on tradition and the profound respect accorded to it. Whether in the bustling streets of Seoul or the serene landscapes of Kyoto, a beautiful convergence of the past and present unfolded before my eyes, primarily embodied by the youth embracing traditional attire as they visited revered temples and imperial palaces.
The traditional costumes, unmissable in their vibrant hues and adorned with motifs on raw silk or organza, became a visual symphony. However, what truly captivated my attention was the metamorphosis of the classic kimono into contemporary fashion. As I perused the shops, quilted jackets emerged as a recurring theme, featuring a unique closure akin to the original kimono—crossing with a ribbon, allowing for the free flow of air at the armpits.
A fascinating dance of tradition and modernity unfolded in yet another aspect—the intricate combination of shoes and socks. In both Seoul and Tokyo, the connection between footwear and socks became a subtle yet essential element of daily life. The insistence on wearing socks, considering the cultural norm of removing shoes in certain places, introduced a nuanced demand, a practice less familiar in Occidental countries but one that gradually revealed its logic.
Moreover, the sock game in these Eastern metropolises proved to be a delightful revelation. In the busiest shopping districts, dedicated sock shops beckoned, offering an unparalleled array of choices—from bows and lace to kawai doodles. The meticulous attention to detail in sock fashion served not just as a functional necessity but as a vibrant expression of individual style, adding an unexpected layer to the sartorial tapestry of the East.
Finally, let's not forget the bag charms—where hanging puppets, tamagotchis, teddy bears, and wish charms create a quirky world of accessories. While I'd noticed this trend before without understanding its appeal, visiting Buddhist temples shed some light. The idea of carrying these charms for health, prosperity, or good relationships, recommended by the temples, strangely aligns with the modern habit of hanging them on bags. Intrigued, I hung mine on my phone, and now, influenced by the charm, a tamagotchi decorates my new Uniqlo cross bag.
To conclude this journey of exploration, Shibuya and Harajuku emerge as the crowning jewels, solidifying their status as the epicenter of Japanese fashion. Stepping into these vibrant districts felt like entering an avant-garde dreamscape—colors, textures, and shapes melding in a symphony of creativity that defied any preconceived notions from Occidental magazines. The visual feast that unfolded before my eyes surpassed all expectations, compelling me to revisit these fashion hubs repeatedly, each time discovering new facets of unbridled artistic expression.
In stark contrast to the minimalist grace of Kyoto, Shibuya unfolded as a kaleidoscope that transcended conventional boundaries. The abundance and extravagance in every aspect of fashion left an indelible mark on my senses, beckoning me to immerse myself in this sea of boundless creativity.

It was against this backdrop that I decided to indulge in my personal tradition—a travel haircut. Despite my initial resolve to leave my hair untouched this time, the allure of Harajuku's uniqueness proved irresistible. While I didn't venture into the realm of orange roots or daring bangs, I embraced the experience of becoming a part of this one-of-a-kind place, weaving my personal narrative into the vibrant tapestry that is Harajuku.
As I reflect on the vivid impressions left by Shibuya and Harajuku, I find myself not only a spectator but a participant in the living, breathing artistry that defines these districts. The journey concludes not just with memories but with a newfound appreciation for the ever-evolving canvas of Japanese fashion, where tradition and innovation coalesce in a harmonious celebration of style.
P.S. I know this is different than data oriented topics, but photography and traveling is big part of my life, so I decided to share that with you and hope you will like it.
Loved your observations and descriptions, and impressed by the street photography!
